Artist Biography and Philosophy
Nature’s integrated visual symphonies and operas play perfectly in billions of ways every second. These processes inspire me. I’ve spent my life creating as both artist and educator, doing what I love by responding to natures inspiration. That said, I also do it for the collective heart living within.
In the words of departed friend Goldie Rush, “I follow the chicken skin.” This to me means experiencing the miraculous and breathtaking beauty of our home the Earth. I love creating living works of art, reflecting the magic of our home planet. Each subject invites the approach taken in its creation.
Rather than inventing something anew, painting for me is more a process of aligning with what is, becoming a witnessing presence to the felt mysteries. Nature as a whole has perfection throughout it, but we humans don’t necessarily see it that way.
As an undergraduate I studied art and art history at Scripps College, subsequently receiving a Master’s in sculpture from San Francisco State University, studying with Stephen de Staebler and Robert Bechtle. Teaching art and practicing art therapy on the island of Kauai also inform my practice. After Grad School I taught at USF, Menlo College, and Louisiana Tech University. For thirty years I taught watercolor painting and color theory at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, stepping away from Academia in 2022 to pursue art making full time and some private teaching.
